Entrance - Write Up - Major Submission for Sound

"Entrance" is my major work for Sound. One of the key focuses of this work was immersion, this track aims to place the listener in a trance-like state, the introductory passage stems from this train of thought, preparing and inducing the listener to a particular place.

I did face a few new challenges in the recording of this song, this is the first time I've used a keyboard in anything I've done, and although it's only basic octaves of D with a few additional voicings, I was pretty happy with how it filled out certain parts of the mix. I especially like it's momentary return around the 7:40 mark.

The drums have also undergone a slight change, I put together a new 'kit' on my crappy electronic kit which seemed to work a bit better for recording. It's a lot more 'wet' sounding and the snare has a bigger 'crack', one of the main problems I had with the old drum sound was that the snare was very weak. My drumming is a bit better on this track too which is good, I'm happy with the way the 5/4 section at the end turned out even though it was a challenge; I came up with the beat just on my lap while my girlfriend was home in-between shifts, when she headed back to work I got back into recording and it took me a fair while to remember how it went. (I was trying to play along to the bass part but in this arrangement the drums actually follow the guitar)

Overall I think it successfully captures the demeanor and message that I aimed to communicate through the sounds and arrangements; it starts ominously yet peacefully, builds assertively into a strong force, works itself into a tangle and unravels on a pensive note.
