R & D

This short piece of work is a sub-subsection of what will become my major project. For my major project I will be creating a short film which unveils a semi-abstract narrative without using any actual dialogue. The recorded sound/score/song is the basis of the work from which the visual elements will work off. The intention is to encourage the listener to hear things more intently, to hear that there is a narrative, a story, within a piece of music.

This short recording is a snippet of some of my experiments with atmospherics, which play a vital role in my work. I am attempting to create a mood, a demeanor, through the sound. This work is only a simple scratch recording with a few noise tracks, a couple of reverb-laden atmosphere tracks and 2 instrument tracks.

I imagine the visual manifestation of this atmosphere to be something like an electrical storm in a vastly arid region, like a salt lake.

In researching similar sorts of approaches I haven't found anything in particular that relates. I am a big fan of instrumental music, bands such as Mogwai, Sunn O))) and Pelican, but none of whom have had any film clips or visual stimuli I could relate this project to. The film clip for the song Vicarious by Tool has a similar visual space to the one I've been creating for my project, (being very dusty, open arid regions with strange forms moving within them, also a loose sense of narrative) but this song and accompanying clip are very much about the lyrics, the words. My goal is to communicate an equally captivating message without words. I am trying to do something original in this project and hopefully my execution of my final project will be successful enough to pull this idea off.
